10-year-old’s ‘vigorous’ defense of her faith condemned by judge

A 10-year-old homeschool girl described as “well liked, social and interactive with her peers, academically promising and intellectually at or superior to grade level” has been told by a New Hampshire court official to attend a government school because she was too “vigorous” in defense of her Christian faith.

The decision from Marital Master Michael Garner reasoned that the girl’s “vigorous defense of her religious beliefs to [her] counselor suggests strongly that she has not had the opportunity to seriously consider any other point of view.”

The recommendation was approved by Judge Lucinda V. Sadler, but it is being challenged by attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund, who said it was “a step too far” for any court.

The ADF confirmed today it has filed motions with the court seeking reconsideration of the order and a stay of the decision sending the 10-year-old student in government-run schools in Meredith, N.H.

  1. This is really awful and an outrage!

On a different note, I wanted to share this novena with you. It was given to me by a friend who is a Catholic homeschooling Mom of nine children and an author. She told me that she and a group of couples suffering from infertility prayed this novena and in the next year every one of them were blessed with a child!

Could you please pray this for me? Receiving this novena gave me hope! Thank you so much!

Novena to JPII for _______ to conceive a baby.

Dear John Paul II, servant of God, we believers of the Most Holy Trinity; Mary, the mother of God; St. Joseph; and the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church are united in prayers with those on the Catholic-Fertility list.

Dear John Paul II, servant of God, who are already in heaven, this is a novena for your intercession that __________ becomes pregnant and delivers a healthy baby who will glorify and praise God.

For people certain things are impossible to attain and sometimes people are unable to understand God’s will, but we deeply believe in your intercession, JPII. You always defended children, especially the unborn ones, and you loved them above all. Please look at _________ who is asking for biological children. Look at the tears in her eyes begging to become a mother.

St Ann, you gave birth at a late age to our Queen of Heaven and Earth, the Most Holy Mary. That is what God wanted. With God nothing is impossible.

We believe that God, Creator of heaven and earth, will look kindly upon _______ and give her the blessing, through Mary, the Virgin Mother of God and JPII, of becoming a mother of her biological and adopted children whom she will love and thank God for.

Deal JPII, please help our prayers to be answered and that _____________’s womb be filled with the beating heart of a tiny baby. We already give you thanks and sincerely believe in your intercession to God.

Dear JPII, your beloved mother also asked God for you to be born. Please remember our prayers. Amen

    • Of course, Maria!

I don’t know if I’ve ever shared with you, but I “claim” the Holy Father’s first miracle! After infertility and pregnancy loss, the day he died I had a little talk with him. I asked him to pray for me and either obtain for me the blessing of another child (a son would be nice) or complete and total peace about not having more children. According to my chart, our youngest child was conceived the next day! Nearly four and a half years later, I still thank God and JPII for this wonderful blessing and will continue for the rest of my life.

  2. Carla says:

My goodness, that is horrible! I don’t even have words at how angry this makes me!

  3. The decision from Marital Master Michael Garner reasoned that the girl’s “vigorous defense of her religious beliefs to [her] counselor suggests strongly that she has not had the opportunity to seriously consider any other point of view.”

Because, you know, at 10, she should be making all of her own decisions? And what if, at 10, she rejected the science the government school teaches? Or if at 10 she rejects basic hygeine? Or if at 10 she decides she’ll only eat M&M’s?

  4. Lisa Sweet says:

Terrible!! And happening in my state, to boot! I read that HSLDA is involved also. I pray for a proper resolution to this case which restores and protects parental rights. Ooooh, it makes me angry!

How ridiculous to state that the girl holds her religious beliefs too strongly!!! That is a blessing, not a curse…more adults should be as strong. Isn’t it our duty as parents to teach our children truths?

  5. mum6kids says:

Good grief! This is the very thing that I am so frightened is about to happen here in the UK.
    Prayers for the family.
    I hope they win!

I also saw your story about JPII and your baby.
Must have a word with him myself.
