Year of the Family

The Bishop of the Diocese of Austin, Texas (my diocese) has designated  2009 the Year of the Family.  As Bishop Aymond said, quoting Pope John-Paul II, “As the family goes, so goes the nation and so goes the world in which we live.” Bishop Aymond went on to say, “Today this statement [made by JPII] can give us grave concern or great hope.”  And he comes down firmly on the side of hope.  You can hear him HERE.

Here is a statement I found on the Diocesan Website:

During 2009 we are called to be holy families, not just today but throughout our lives. Bishop Aymond has proclaimed 2009 the “Year of the Family” in our diocese. It will be a time of celebration, reflection and formation as we quip ourselves to meet the challenges of Catholic family life in the 21st century.

Our Church teaches that the family is the “domestic Church” and “school of charity” and that as Church, we are all members of the family of God. The Year of the Family will promote understanding of, and reflection on, these principles and support parishes, families, and individuals in living out these principles in the home, parish, and larger community.

I am so excited about this.  The Year of the Family!  I am sure I will have a lot to say about it.  It will be a very good year!
