Free Homeschool Planner Pages in iWork 09 Formats (***NOW ALSO AVAILABLE IN ’08 FORMAT)

I like to set up our yearly plans in a traditional planner form, but I don’t want to have to handwrite it all.  (My kids appreciate it when I don’t because they can actually read the forms when I type them!)  I like to have a weekly plan for each of the kids and a daily “assignment sheet” for each of them as well.

I needed a template that would work with my planning method so that I could just “fill in the blanks” and have all the formatting and such the same from day-to-day and week-to-week.  I didn’t find any ready made template that met my own requirements, made in iWork documents, specifically.  I refuse, refuse, refuse to use microsoft cr*p.  I just refuse. (You know, just because you CAN do something doesn’t mean you should!  Just because I CAN use microsoft cr*p on my Mac doesn’t mean I should!)

So, with lots of help from Chief, I made a couple of templates. I will make these available (gratis) to anyone who wants to use them. The weekly lesson planner pages have been created in Numbers and the daily page has been created in Pages.  Each Daily Template contains 5 days in one template and the Weekly Template is 2 pages for one week.  These are to be printed on standard 8.5 X 11 sheets and you can punch holes in them to put them in a binder or you can just put them in a folder or whatever makes sense to you.  You can fill in all the information right on the computer and print as you go or you can print them blank and handwrite the assignments.

I only have spaces for 5 subjects because I put all of my English/Grammar type things in one space, all of my History-Geography/Literature in another and some classes, the ones we only do once or twice a week, will share spaces with others of similar frequency.  This could be easily modified for any number of classes, however.  Just insert rows and resize accordingly then you would save it again by going under “File” and then find “Save as Template” in your drop down menu.  Before doing this, you can actually fill in the subjects and anything else that would repeat each day so that you don’t have to type the same things over and over.  Please note that if you get these Templates and want to modify them, I cannot help you with that. I don’t have time to give tutorials on Pages and Numbers templates.  You will just have to use the “trial and error” method, but at least it’s a start, right?

Here are some screenshots of the basic forms:

SAMPLE 2PAGE NUMBERS WEEKLY (PDF)

PagesDaily sample (PDF)

So, here’s the trick…. how to upload these so you iWorks users can download them…..  Pages and Numbers are not document types supported for upload at WordPress.  I can, of course, turn them into PDF’s for anyone who just wants to print them, but there are loads of other forms out there that are ready for printing and filling in by hand, so adding yet another one won’t  (probably) be useful to anyone.

So, here’s what I’ll try:  If you would like to try these iWork Templates, please leave a comment. You are required to leave your email address to comment (never, ever published or disclosed) and I can use that email address and send these forms attached in an email.  If there is ANY interest at all, I will send these out as soon as possible, but if it turns out that there is a lot of interest (hey, ya never know!) I will email at least twice a week

Of course, these forms are ©ME!!!  They are free for your own personal use, for your own homeschool.  Yes, if you’re teaching at a coop and want to use the Daily Assignment Sheet for all of your students, you may.  Please leave the small copyright notice in place (it is not in the same place on the actual Templates as it is on the screenshots above.)  Thanks!

***As an alternative to using Pages or Numbers, you may consider using iCal.  You can find a really good tutorial HERE.  Whichever you find most useful, I wish you luck and success in your schooling!

EDITED TO ADD:  THESE ARE MADE USING IWORK 09.  IWORK 08 CANNOT OPEN THEM.  IF YOU ARE RUNNING 08, PLEASE SPECIFY THAT IN YOUR COMMENT.  I HAVE A SOLUTION FOR YOU, BUT I NEED TO KNOW IF YOU ARE RUNNING 08.

Solution completed.  I now have these available as templates in both 08 and 09 formats.  Please specify which version you would like me to send.

Thanks for the template ideas. I’d love to get these and use them. Organizing is a must—I’m homeschooling five right now!

    • I hear ya, Deb! I did phonics and chemistry one year with 5 students total. I’ve only got 4 kids at home just now and the 3 yo isn’t doing much by way of “formal” schooling… mostly because I don’t want to go back to schooling 4 just yet! (and yes, 3 is a bit young anyway!)

      Email sent. God bless!

  10. Loren says:

Hi there… would you mind forwarding a copy to me as well.. I love my iwork, what I have used with it.. i have the 08 version. I’m trying to talk my dear hubby into the new box set with the new OS. As soon as I bought my macbook.. like a month later they came out with Leopard. So I heard that they are soon to come out with Leopard snow.. so I’m going to wait… Thank you!

  14. Rachel says:

Those are great!! They look alot like my lesson plan (word files) I used when I was a school teacher!! 🙂

I am sure the organization and planning part of lesson planning is SO much easier now that it is on the computer – no more erasing and rewriting. 😛

Will you be “schooling” Little Dood? 😛

    • Hey, Rachel,

I won’t be doing formal schooling with the boy. To keep him busy while the girls are working on their things, I do provide more structured activities for him, and from them he learns things, but I don’t start any formal schooling until they are solidly 4 (and then it’s very basic.) For my little guy, that will mean next year.

I’ve always been in the “better late than early; better on time than late” camp and I still think age 5-ish is a good time for most kids to do more formal (but not too formal yet) schooling, but I also watch for cues from the individual child (as an example, I had one who was insistent that she learn to read while she was still 3, close to 4, but still 3 and another did not read until about age 7. Both are excellent, “above level” readers now and the one who didn’t read much at all until 7 still did other work, I just kept the reading to a minimum and read to her as often as necessary.)

I’ll include theboy in our crafts for celebrating the liturgical year, let him play with the math manipulatives and things like that, but it will mostly be learning by observing, I guess you could call it. Baking cookies means he gets to observe measuring, painting means he learns about colors, reading together means he learns about letters, words, sentence structure. He naturally does “narration” type things. He loves to retell about everything and I make sure to take the time to listen. I might have him draw a picture about whatever he’s retelling (a book we just read, a movie we watched, an event that took place) but it is really informal.

My primary goal for them before I start schooling is to teach them to recognize that our “learning hours” are times that are set apart (and yes, learning is an all-the-time thing, but we do set aside time to do ‘school work’) and that it is ~or can be~ a fun time. Now, of course, one day when they are learning multiplication tables or long division or how to divide fractions, they may not think of it as fun, but they do, generally, start out that way!

    Hi,

We’d like to try the iWork ’09 version please.

Also, have you tried ZIP/Stuffing the files? Perhaps that would be uploadable. There are other ways that might be more complicated but may work…

    Thanks!

    • I wish that would work, but wordpress has a very specific list of files you can upload to free, wordpress hosted accounts. The files are under 300kb (combined) so size really isn’t an issue.

I hope you find the templates useful.
